The wait will be over for Irish consumers by the end of this week as Sky has said it is to officially launch its talk and broadband services for Ireland on Thursday, 7 February.

Sky is entering the market at a time when UPC is offering broadband services with speeds in excess of 100Mb/s and the Government’s own national broadband scheme is looking to deliver minimum speeds of 30Mb/s all over Ireland through a series of public/private partnerships.

Sky has promised to invest $1.5 billion in Ireland over the next five years and create 900 jobs at a customer contact and sales office in Dublin. Last year it agreed a deal with BT and eircom to deliver its service. At present eircom’s top tier offering is a 24Mb/s connection, which retails for €60 per month including phone service.

Sky has 4.1 million broadband subscribers in the UK where it offers packages from 8Mb/s to 76Mb/s.
