You could call it divine intervention, but a Co. Louth-based nun has become the first person in the world to be presented with a new advanced version of the ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) certificate.

Sister Monica Ryan of Ardee, Co. Louth, was presented with the first-ever ECDL Advanced Expert certificate at the ECDL Foundation in Dublin last month, along with a number of other recipients.

ECDL Expert is an amalgamation of a number of advanced modules of the ECDL, the first two of which were developed two years ago. These modules, Word Processing and Spreadsheets, were recently joined by two more advanced modules in Databases and Presentations to form the new ECDL Expert certificate.

Sister Ryan, who is in her late 70s, decided to train up to the four advanced modules as soon as she heard about the Expert certification from the ECDL Foundation, according to regional development officer, Eileen Glackin. All four advanced modules must be passed in order to receive the prestigious certificate.

There are, according to the Foundation, quite a number of other nuns in the country who have successfully trained in ECDL, so you may believe at this point that the sisters are doing it just for themselves, but not Sister Ryan.

She and a number of others work as ECDL trainers in the Ardee area and Sister Ryan herself manages the local test centre in the town, Meitheal Ath Fhirdia. Like other trainers, she advertises her services in the local media to mature adults looking to get trained up to what is now the world’s most recognised computer qualification.

‘She is one of our staunchest supporters, so we felt she definitely deserved to be first to be presented with the new certificate,’ said Glackin.
