Seoul University claims 3D breakthrough

Anyone still skeptical about the possibilities for 3DTV in the home might get a little less cynical this week after researchers from Seoul National University announced a breakthrough in glasses-less TV.

Despite glasses-less 3D TVs being on the market for some time consumers have had their viewing experience limited to certain sweet spots before the image quality breaks down. Now researchers from the South Korean capital have developed a slatted barrier that is placed on the screen to create an illusion of depth viewable from any angle.

The slat effect was created using polarisers similar to those already found in 3D lenses, so effectively the project could be likened to putting glasses on TVs instead of humans.

No word yet on when we will see these sets on the market.
