SATA moves to bus power

The Serial ATA Standards Organisation (SATA-IO) is working on a specification which it claims could eliminate the need for power cables on external drives. The Power Over eSATA initiative aims to design cabling that would power external drives yet keep the existing standardised connectors and 3Gbps data transfer speeds. The new specification is expected to be finalised by the middle of this year.

“Its fast transfer rate and efficient protocol makes eSATA the highest-performing external mainstream storage connection,” said Knut Grimsrud, SATA-IO president and Intel Fellow.
