SAP‘s new Business One is an integrated management software system designed for small and medium sized businesses (SMBs).

The product, designed for businesses employing between 10 and 150 people, represents SAP’s first serious attempt to make its ERP software, normally associated with only the largest organisations, applicable to smaller companies. It is hoping to achieve 15 per cent of its total global revenues from software sold to smaller firms by 2005.

Among the more significant features is the Drag & Relate function, which enables users to click on one item and drag to another to retrieve information from the customer relationship management (CRM) function and automated sales automation for pipeline tracking, opportunity management, strategic selling and contact management.

The financial management module includes multicurrency, budgeting and bank reconciliation, and the inventory management system has kitting and multiprice lists. Business One also has a reporting module.

The system is based on Microsoft SQL Server database and Windows operating system. SAP says Business One is readily compatible with its higher end management software suites including mySAP All-in-One, which his designed for companies with more than 150 employees.

According to Jill Harrison, SAP channel manager, approximately 50 per cent of the SMB sector has application software, but much of these firms will have software that needs to be replaced or upgraded.

A typical price for Business One for four users would be EUR15,000 including implementation, according to Harrison.
