Samsung launches its XR headset, Project Moohan
Samsung has confirmed that it will launch its long-awaited augmented reality headset, Project Moohan, this year. This was reported to CNBC. This device is being developed as a competitor to the Apple Vision Pro, which was launched last year at a price of $3,500. Samsung had initially announced the headset for 2024, but made its public debut this year at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Project Moohan is presented by Samsung as an ‘extended reality’ (XR) device, designed to connect the physical and digital worlds. While specific details about the device remain scarce, the visible cameras on the front suggest that gesture control is possible, similar to the Vision Pro.
To develop the headset, Samsung collaborated with Qualcomm and Google to create a new operating system: the Android XR platform. In December, Samsung announced that the headset would have Google’s AI assistant, Gemini. Users can use Gemini to navigate through apps and tasks via a conversational interface.
Patrick Chomet, executive vice president at Samsung, stressed to CNBC that the combination of advanced visual technology with artificial intelligence is the essence of the product. According to Chomet, the device would not be complete without the intelligent component, which is in line with the broader industry vision of smarter AI assistants that can better understand user needs.
Samsung was one of the early players in the virtual reality headset market, but the technology did not have the widespread adoption originally expected. With advances in display technology and chips, large companies like Samsung are considering “mixed reality” as the next step for computers, a new frontier they are targeting.
During the launch of its S25 series of smartphones in January, Samsung unveiled a product roadmap. On it, the company mentioned Project Moohan, in addition to a foldable smartphone reminiscent of Huawei’s Mate XT. The final product of Project Moohan looks like glasses, indicating that Samsung may develop a smaller and more portable XR headset.
The question at this stage is whether there is room for another premium headset in the blended reality, or even if there is a space for such a device at all. Apple has reportedly stopped production of the Vision Pro late last year and it’s speculated there may be as many as 500,000 devices in storage.
