Sky’s 3D TV channel has begun broadcasting today.
The channel, which Sky claims is Europe’s first in-home 3D channel, will show a host of live sports in 3D, kicking off with the 2010 Ryder Cup this weekend, as well as arts and entertainment programmes.
Viewers with a Sky HD box that subscribe to the broadcaster’s top channels, will be able to access the channel providing they have a compatible 3DTV set and 3D glasses.
Viewers will also be able to watch movies on the channel. Monsters vs Aliens and Bolt will be among the free content, while a selection of pay-per-view titles will also be available.
These include StreetDance 3D, Garfield’s Pet Force 3D, Disney’s A Christmas Carol 3D and Step Up 3D – all of which are also available on Virgin’s 3D Movies on Demand service that launched earlier this week.
Sky said that in January next year it will broadcast all three of Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story films in 3D. The latest in the animated series, Toy Story 3 3D, will be available on a pay-per-view basis while Toy Story 1 and 2 will be added to the free content available on the channel.
“We see 3D as ‘Event TV’, an opportunity for people to share an incredible visual experience in their home, watching some of the biggest and best television available including; live sport, movies, entertainment and arts programmes,” said John Cassy, Sky 3D’s Channel Director.
“The launch of the channel is the just the beginning, 3D has arrived and will change TV forever.”
Sky 3D was initially made available in 1,500 pubs across the UK in April this year.
