Roadferry, a Belfast-based logistics and distribution company, is upgrading its wide area network to run on Internet Protocol.

The migration project is being handled by Cable & Wireless as part of a five-year managed services contract valued at €800,000.

The deal covers supply of a complete communications system, including frame relay data circuits and phone systems, to the company, centred round Roadferry’s new warehouse operation.

Roadferry has built a new 100,000 sq ft warehouse in the Port of Belfast to accommodate its growing business. The company has merged all of its Northern Ireland activities into this single central site.

The Cable & Wireless contract covers management of Roadferry’s data migration to an Internet Protocol (IP) based WAN, voice migration to IP telephony, the introduction of wireless technology, supply of frame relay data circuits and Internet access over a secure network.

The telco is also providing what is known as dect phone technology, where mobile phones using infrared technology can be used within Roadferry’s premises free of charge.
