RMS' research could make it easier to drive in the dark

The European Commission has awarded Dublin-based SME Reflective Measurement Systems (RMS) almost €1 million in the latest round of Horizon 2020 SME Instrument Phase 2 for their project which tackles the problems of measuring the night visibility (retro reflectivity) of road lines and markers.

The project, The validation, certification and industrial testing of advanced road marking retro reflectance (RL) measuring equipment (RetroTek-M) for the global market (DuaLine), will develop a new technology for improving night-time visibility of road markings and studs. The aim is to provide technologically advanced, cost-effective and user-friendly solutions to the problem of maintaining night visibility on highway networks.

Joe Turley, CEO of RMS, said: “This funding will allow RMS to develop the market disrupting RetroTek Technology and carry out pilot testing with target customers in the road maintenance industry worldwide, prepare & receive product certification & evaluation to industry standards, and evaluate market segments, target customers and choose suitable channel partners for EU & USA markets. It will also allow RMS to accelerate plans to expand into Europe & the USA over the next two years.”

RMS employs three people directly but also works with eight financial, engineering and IT contractors.

This brings to 31 the total number of Irish SMEs funded under the SME Instrument of Horizon 2020 (25 Phase 1 receiving €50,000 each and six Phase 2 receiving up to €2.5 million each).

The European Commission received 614 proposals under Phase 2 by the first cut-off date of 2015 on 18 March. Some 230 projects received an evaluation score above the application threshold and 42 or 18.3% have been selected for funding.
