Dublin-based IT solutions provider Heavey RF has clinched a six-figure deal with DSV, a Danish global logistics specialist. The contract with DSV was to replace the Danish firm’s manual warehousing system with advanced voice picking technology and wireless handheld computers.
The system, VocalPoint, opens a two-way dialogue between DSV’s warehouse management system (WMS) and the warehouse teams. Instead of relying on paper lists, the teams use speech as they perform their daily assignments. Electronic orders are automatically converted to speech which is transmitted to warehouse staff using wireless technology provided by Heavey RF.
The new system has raised productivity by 15% and improved accuracy up by over 300%, according to DSV. This accuracy is “the most important thing for any successful warehouse”, according to Nigel Devenish, commercial director for DSV Ireland. “You have to get the right items to the right customer at the right time.”
Heavey RF specialises in logistics and warehousing software, which it develops in Ireland. The firm was winner of the 2008 IT Project of the Year (SME) category in this year’s ICT Excellence Awards, which are organised and co-sponsored by Mediateam, publishers of Irish Computer and other technology titles.
