We all know that we need to protect children online, but not everyone has the skills to do so effectively.
With an established reputation in the security appliance market for large and small enterprise, Cyberoam has turned its skills to the home and small office/home office (SOHO) market with an accomplished effort, the NetGenie.
The NetGenie is a small device that acts as a gateway firewall for local area network (LAN), Wi-Fi and 3G (via USB connection). In doing so, the NetGenie allows a very easy configuration to ensure that age appropriate content is served to users.
The device is connected via a standard Ethernet connection, so it can be connected to an existing DSL router/modem, or direct to the likes of a cable modem with an Ethernet presentation. It has four network connections for direct connection, a USB slot for 3G up link, and dual 802.11n standard wireless antennae.
Once connected, you log in as an administrator to the attractive Web-based control panel and create user profiles for all users.
The key feature in this is a slider that starts at 0 to eight years, and then goes upward to 12, 17, 21 and adult. With each setting, age appropriate material is presented on preconfigured lists, based on Cyberoam’s extensive experience in security and content filtering. There are also whitelist options to allow administrators to ensure that material they know to be safe and appropriate can be accessed.
There are also controls for applications and devices too. Applications such as those that access Facebook, Twitter or even music services can be controlled, as can devices such as tablets, smart phones or other Wi-Fi enabled devices. The combination of preconfigured options, with the ability to fine tune via whitelists gives very granular level of control, especially when combined with time controls and reports and alerts.
The feature set and easy controls give you the confidence to allow children to access the Internet for homework or leisure with confidence that they will not exposed to inappropriate material.
Three-year deal
There are also extensive protections against malware, botnet attacks and other common threats. This protection is supplied in part through a three-year security subscription to Parental Controls (website filtering, applications filtering), Anti-Virus and Intrusion Prevention System that automatically keeps the device updated against Internet threats. This is a significant step forward over six month or one year subscriptions that are more commonly seen on such devices and goes a long way to ensuring that protections remain for the likely lifetime of the device.
The NetGenie allows anyone who has ever used a browser to configure the device to protect vulnerable users across a range of access options. The combination of preconfigured options and three year protection updates makes this one of the best devices on the market for quick, easy and effective protection for your family on the Internet.
