About 250,000 viewers will be required to make the changeover from analogue receivers to DTT tuners at the end of 2012, according to figures from the Department of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources.
The figure was revealed by Minister Pat Rabbitte (pictured) yesterday at the official launch of the Saorview DTT service.
“With the national launch of Saorview, Ireland at last enters the era of national free to air digital broadcasting,” said Rabbitte. “This will bring new opportunities to our Irish broadcasters ensuring that they continue to compete with their European counterparts and will also benefit TV viewers by offering a wider array of TV channels, programme guides, information channels and some high definition content.
