Carrying projectors to meetings is not very practical. They often weigh much more than the average laptop, and most are just far too cumbersome to drag around.
However, the new Dell M109S DLP projector measures just 3.5″ x 4″ x 1.5″. It weighs only 360g, although add in the power cables (to which a VGA and S-Video cable are attached) and the total weight comes to just over 800g.
The M109S manages to cram itself into such a small package owing to the use of LEDs as opposed to the traditional lamp used in conventional projectors. LEDs are cheaper than lamps, last longer and require less cooling.
But the big drawback is that they’re not particularly bright. Able to muster just 50 ANSI lumens (most lamp-driven projectors can manage at least 2,000 ANSI lumens), the M109S requires a fairly dark room in which to operate if you’re looking for a large projection.
We managed a 68″ screen from a distance of nine and a half feet, but this was with the blinds down. At a distance of just under five feet, the image size was just 37″ display, but it was visible without the need to dim the lights.
With a native resolution of 800 x 600 and an 800:1 contrast ratio, the M109S does a decent job with PowerPoint presentations. But, as expected, it’s not so impressive when used to display video. Colours look washed out and it struggles with darker scenes.
