Intel has introduced its highest speed desktop processor, the first chip to operate at a clock speed of 3.06Ghz, or more than three billion instructions per second.

Computer manufacturers are already getting in on the act, and Dell has announced that it plans to sell a line of desktops featuring the new chip. A spokesman for Dell pointed out that new 3Ghz machines will include Intel’s hyperthreading technology, which allows users to run programs such as virus-scanning applications in the background with unused processor resources, without slowing the performance of foreground applications.

According to Louis Burns, vice president and general manager of Intel’s desktop platforms group, hyperthreading will make multitasking easier. The chips incorporating this technology will be branded with a ‘HT’ insignia, as well as the Pentium 4 logo.
