OpenAI completes restructuring as a for-proft company
OpenAI has completed its transformation into a for-profit entity. The transition involved restructuring the main business unit into a public benefit corporation, a classification that allows for profit generation while still prioritising the public good.
Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings approved the plan, marking the culmination of nearly a year of discussions and negotiations with stakeholders, including investors, philanthropic organisations, and the attorneys general of California and Delaware.
As part of the restructuring, OpenAI has granted Microsoft, an early investor, a 27% stake in the for-profit entity. The non-profit organisation, which has supervised OpenAI since its founding in 2015, retains a significant stake worth $130 billion (€111.8 billion), which is expected to increase in value.
This new structure should provide OpenAI with significant advantages. By operating as a for-profit company, it will have better access to funding and be in a stronger position to attract top talent. Additionally, this change paves the way for a possible IPO in the future – and the potential to incorporate advertising.
