The idea of ‘hardware assist’ is one of the key virtualisation concepts that should be attracting end users and implementers at the moment, according to Citrix. The idea revolves around a platform virtualisation approach which brings efficient full virtualisation as the operating system “gets direct access to resources without any emulation or OS modification”.
Pointed out by Patrick Irwin, product manager, Citrix, as an area to watch, he continued “the likes of Intel have built silicon into its processors and chip families to support virtualisation and if you do this when you virtualise a server operating system you can make the hypervisor very thin. No longer does it have to emulate all the hardware but it can work in conjunction with the operating system and the processor technology to run in a more efficient manner.”
