Almost one in three owner-managers and senior executives in Irish SMEs now work from home at least one day a month, according to new research from O2 Ireland.

This represents a 25% increase from last year, while 12% of those surveyed telework more than four days a month.

The research, conducted by independent market research company TNS mrbi on behalf of 02, found that 37% of those who telework do so to increase productivity and get more done without the usual day-to-day office interruptions.

A total of 27% of those surveyed cite convenience as the reason, while 14% say it provides a better work life balance. Just over 10% telework to avoid traffic gridlock – up four points from the survey last year.

The research highlights that there has been a slight improvement in use of broadband, with 42% saying they have broadband access from their office (up from 34% last year), while one third have broadband access from home (up from 23% last year). However, a significant 50% who enquired about broadband found that it was not available.

Paul Farrell, marketing director of O2 Ireland, said broadband availability remains a big issue for workers. The lack of broadband in many areas outside Dublin is proving to be a barrier to decentralization policies and overall competitiveness, he added.
