As predicted, Palm’s latest smartphone, the Palm Pre, will be available in Ireland on the O2 network from 16 October.

Aimed primarily at business users, the Palm Pre is the first phone based on the new Palm webOS software, which brings mobile applications together in a unique and intuitive multi-tasking platform.

Commenting on the launch, Danuta Gray, CEO Telefonica O2 Ireland, said, “O2 is delighted to be the exclusive carrier of the new Palm Pre in Ireland, which means our customers will be among the first outside North America to get their hands on the much anticipated new device. Our strategy continues to be to bring our customers the very best innovations in mobile communications, and with Palm Pre we are expanding our portfolio of market leading smartphones.”

An Irish launch date had been speculated on since the announcement that O2 would the carrier in the Republic and UK. The Pre was launched in June in the US to generally positive reviews. Uptake, however, has been slower than expected with estimated sales of just over 800,000 units.
