Nokia Communicator 9210i

?THE COMMUNICATOR 9210i combines phone and personal digital assistant functions in a clamshell format that runs Symbian’s EPOC operating system and Personal Java software. The phone also includes a version of Real Networks RealPlayer, so it can play video and audio files.

This Star Trek-style device sports a full keyboard and like its predecessor — the 9210 — a colour display with 4096 colours. Its data transmission speeds can hit 43.2 kilobits per second when used with Vodafone’s HSCSD solution aimed at high-end business users. These users need fast and reliable mobile access to their company e-mail server and the ability to collect and read e-mail and respond to them, and the 9210I provides them with a tool to do just that.

Having reviewed, the previous 9210 version just last year, I see no compelling reason for users of that device to upgrade to the 9210i. The only differences lie in an additional 24Mbyte of memory and support for Flash technology so you can view Web graphics and animations — the latter is of zero importance and of minimal interest to the audience this device should attract: the tech-savvy business community.

The 9210i is not sexy to look at, weighing 244g it is bulky, more personal defence weapon than phone but nevertheless it is an extremely user-friendly and powerful communication device.

While this device can be used to create word documents or spreadsheets, or even access the Web in full colour: The real beauty of the device is its multi-dimmensional communication features. While making a call, you can do so from your desk handsfree with the aid of the speakerphone, you also the option of dialling in and collecting your e-mail and other files off the company network. But be prepared to carry it in your coat or bag rather than in your trouser pocket.
