New virus has gift of the gab

Businesses are being advised to warn staff with internet access about the cunning tactics of a newly discovered worm virus. Trend Micro, an online threat research and support organisation, warns that Worm_ircbot.oz is using MSN Messenger to propagate. It frequently lures its victims into clicking infected links by using the names of popular social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook, says Trend Micro.

Among the phrases used in e-mails sent by the virus in an attempt to lure internet users to their doom are:

  • Can i throw this picture of you and me on myspace?
  • Wanna see my pictures before i send em to facebook?
  • Do I look dumb in this picture? I want to put it on myspace.
  • Hey i found your picture on hotornot.com! I swear its you!
  • This picture isn’t you… right? Lol.

The new worm is also, apparently, something of a linguist, since the messages it generates change to match the language of the targeted operating system -enabling it to capture a wider audience.
