The Eastern Health Shared Services (EHSS) has become the first client to sign up for eircom’s new metro Ethernet service. The service will offer Gigabit speeds for high-speed LAN transfers, internetworking, disaster recovery and real time data access for companies in the Greater Dublin area.
Eircom has constructed a new, highly resilient metro Ethernet network that will offer access points around Dublin and the M50 ring. Each Metro Ethernet link (known as VLAN) is available at speeds of either 20Mbit/s, 100Mbit/s, 300Mbit/s or 1Gbit/s. To set up, eircom installs an Ethernet mini-switch on the customer’s premises, to which the customer connects their own router or switch. The network is fully managed by eircom with 24 x 7 back-up. In terms of service options, clients can choose from Standard or Premium Class service depending on their individual needs.
The service is aimed at large corporations and public sector bodies.
EHSS is responsible for providing Information Communications and Technology (ICT) services to the hundreds of health board offices in the Eastern Regional Health Authority areas of Dublin, Wicklow and Kildare.
The organisation was looking for a fast and reliable link between its servers, housed in Citywest, and its Dublin 8 headquarters and Dr. Steeven’s Hospital.
‘After considering its options EHSS chose eircom metro Ethernet,’ said Tony Carroll, director of ICT Services at EHSS. ‘This service now provides a 1 Gigabit link between Dr Steeven’s and Citywest, and a 100Mbit/s link between Dr. Steeven’s and EHSS disaster recovery site in Santry’. Valerie Judge, chief officer of Eastern Health Shared Services, said that eircom metro Ethernet service provided the best solution for hosting, disaster recovery and infrastructure services to the Eastern Regional Health Authority.
Eircom says it is planning to extend the service to Cork later this year.
