Fears of job cuts are once more haunting workers at Intel’s Leixlip chip-making plant. Staff have been warned that new products are not selling as fast as had been hoped, and that staff cuts may be necessary.
Unoficial sources put the number of possble cuts at 400 to 500 jobs.
Intel has also told its Leixlip staff that the US firm’s Irish workers have failed to match the cost-competitive and skills of its manufacturing plants in Arizona and Israel.
The spectre of job cuts comes amid fears at Leixlip that a projected new production line of advanced processors may now be sited outside of Ireland instead of at Leixlip. This is the 1270 series of processors slated to go into volume production in 2011.
There are also fears among Intel workers that products produced by the Leixlip Fab 10 and Fab 14 facilities may be phased out completely. These are mainly older and lower-end products, for which demand has slowed significantly since the recession began.
