Paul HearnsAt a recent event I had the pleasure of speaking to someone who is close to, but not involved in, the selection process for the next Government CIO (GCIO).

The person was able to tell me that, as the deadline had passed (28 May), the application process was closed and that a number of applications had been received.

The person said that based on previous experience, the interview and selection process would likely be concluded in a few months rather than dragging on into next year.

To be honest, I was surprised and delighted by this.

I had bemoaned the loss of Michael McGrath from, albeit, his interim role, but I was further disheartened by the prospect of a long and drawn out selection process that, in light of the looming though distant general election, might well have dragged in interminably.

However, this quick chat has suggested that not only is the process well underway, but is likely to produce a new appointee in short order. Well, for government jobs that is. I’d go for seasonal, as opposed to glacial, or even geologic, pace.

As the job spec is specific about implementation of the current ICT strategy document, the new appointee will have a solid base from which to work, and strong guide for the near future.

Watch this space, closely.
