Network upgrade erases CAD problem

Network infrastructure solutions provider MJ Flood Technology has won a EUR*400,000 contract with Walls Construction to upgrade the firm’s 225-user network and security infrastructure. The constructor, formerly known as PJ Walls, will get standardised client/server software, spam control and online data backup.

Flood sales manager Gerry Reid said the most challenging element of the network upgrade was to find a suitable backup and recovery solution for the e-mail. Much of Walls’ business involves sharing CAD drawings via e-mail, some of which can be as big as 50MB. Traditional backup to tape was taking as long as 20 hours to complete – although the IT department only had an eight-hour backup window.

“We recommended an online backup solution involving an initial 250GB of primary and secondary storage,” said Reid. “This offers Walls more stability and easier e-mail management. The backup is performed each evening and, as a managed service provider, our staff at our network operations centre resolve any technical issues and ensure the backup is performed in full.”

A Citrix upgrade facilitated delivery of Walls’ mission-critical line of business application (Summit) to multiple sites in Dublin and Cork. Walls IT manager Robbie Armstrong noted: “This provides full control over 225 desktops through one single interface, allowing us to standardise all application delivery. Staff can also instantly print CAD drawings and get on with the business in hand, irrespective of location and without any application constraints.”
