Netflix has announced it will be launching its streaming movie service into the UK and Irish markets in the new year. In a statement today, the company said it will be launching in "early 2012" but did not mention a specific date.

The service promises to offer unlimited TV and film rentals over the Internet to TVs and computers for a monthly subscription across PCs, Macs, tablets and smartphones for a monthly fee.

Founded in 2007 in the US, Netflix began as a DVD-by-post rental service where consumers ordered films online. After introducing a streaming media model the company looked to spin out its postal business as a separate brand, ‘Qwikster’. The move, however, was pulled this month after a user outcry.

Netflix will be competing directly against Lovefilm in the UK. Consumers in the Republic have options of watching streamed movies on platforms like Xbox LIVE and Apple TV, which both operate on a pay-per-rental system. Netflix will be the first to offer a subscription service.
