It looks like it’s time to say goodbye to 3D, again. As we predicted back in September the lack of broadcaster support did not bode well for the format and now Netflix has ended its interest. Far from ditching experiments in new formats, however, the online on-demand service is due to start trials of 4K Ultra HD broadcasts next year. First up will be a remastered version of Netflix’ own Emmy Award-winning series House of Cards.

Netflix had been trialling 3D in the US with a limited catalogue but chief product officer Neil Hunt told blog Macleans that it would not be adding new content in that form.

This leaves Sky as the only broadcaster with an interest in 3D, which it continues to push on its Sports channels.

Meanwhile 3D in the cinemas continues to be a draw as space-set thriller Gravity occupies top spot in the charts and has garnered positive reviews for its use of 3D.
