The European Commission  Netd@ys initiative has culminated in Netd@ys Europe Week 2002 with the presentation in Brussels of showcase Netd@ys projects. The city centre venue, Les Halles Saint-Géry, was transformed into an audio-visual extravaganza vividly capturing the essence of this year’s Netd@ys theme, ‘Image’. Visitors to the exhibition were bathed in waves of sound and vision while discovering and interacting with some of the most imaginative Netd@ys projects from Europe and beyond.

Showcase projects exhibited included the Irish project ‘School Photos’, UK project ‘Eurodans’, Austrian project ‘Minials’, French project ‘L’Europe imaginaire à travers les contes’, and two Italian projects: ‘Sulle spalle dei giganti’ and ‘Omnia Tempus Habent’. Meanwhile, numerous French-Belgium and Flemish-Belgium projects were being staged at various locations in Brussels, including ‘Electro-kino’ which combined dance, music and image.

This was the first showcase event of its kind to be held since the annual Netd@ys initiative was launched in 1997. Netd@ys Week was not confined just to Brussels. While Brussels provided the central stage for key international projects, national events were also organised in participating countries. Netd@ys is a European Commission initiative to encourage and link local projects within and outside the EU and included countries as far a field as Australia, Brazil, Canada and Switzerland. Altogether some 500 projects from participating countries were registered as part of Netd@ys 2002.

Organised by the European Commission’s Directorate-general for Education and Culture, Netd@ys Europe promotes the use of new technologies – especially the Internet – in education and culture. The initiative aims to provide a platform on which participants can promote their educational and cultural projects. It also seeks establish partnerships with other key players so that they may acquire and exchange information, knowledge and experience relevant to their work within education and culture.
