Driving super cars and dodging cops at breakneck speeds – what more could a gamer ask for? Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2 is divided into two primary modes: the World Championship, where drivers can test their skills on open roads with the goal of crossing the finish line first; and Hot Pursuit, in which podium hopefuls must deal with the law. Both modes have the same subcategories: Challenge (set up parameters, hit the tarmac, and battle it out in a single race), ‘You’re the Cop’ (drive as recklessly as those you’re chasing, only you can be righteous), and Championship (the meat of the game, a branching tree of objective-oriented races)
Yes, you can drive Lamborghinis and Ferraris in this game, but you’ll have to earn them, meaning hours of entertainment before you’ve unlocked the 50 cars and 30 tracks. The tracks, scenery and cars are all visually stunning, and the game throttles along at a blistering and smooth frame rate too. Catch some huge air as you hit a speed bump or bash through a police roadblock and you will be rewarded with an amazing ‘bullet time’ view of the action.
The Hot Pursuit mode is destined to be a player favourite. Police are extremely aggressive and will attempt to batter you off the road or onto one of the games many alternate off road routes. If one cop can’t stop you, two will take you on, if you still haven’t been busted you will hear them organising roadblocks or spike strips on your police scanner. As you take more and more hits from the law enforcement officers, your vehicle will begin to resemble more of a crushyard wreck than the gleaming showroom beauty you first hit the streets in. Inflicting damage on these incredibly expensive sports cars gives the game a huge smile factor. You can play this mode on either side of the law, if you’d rather pursue than be pursued you can take the control of a police car and chase down speeders in their high performance cars.
This game has it all, adrenaline thrills, stunning looks and is so immersive that you will pass many happy hours on your couch with this game playing in front of you. If you like driving games, but prefer a little more action than what the simulations titles offer, this game is definitely for you.
