Murdoch hits out at ‘free media’

News Corp Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch has said he is considering re-introducing sharges to access his group’s newspapers online. Citing the decline in journalistic standards resulting from the proliferation of free content. Murdoch also noted the role of electronic devices like the Amazon Kindle and their poor return for newspaper publishers.

E-readers have proved immensely popular as a way of managing digital copies of books, audiobooks, blogs and newspapers using either one-off or subscription payments.

“Quality journalism is not cheap,” explained Murdoch. “The digital revolution has opened many new and inexpensive distribution channels but it has not made content free. We intend to charge for all our news websites.”

News Corp owns broadsheets The Wall Street Journal, the Times, as well as The Sun and New York Post. The group recently posted a 10.7% drop in quarterly revenue to €7.67 billion.
