Mobile point, click and send

Nokia has launched the first mobile phone compatible with its next generation Multimedia Messaging Service. The idea of MMS is to allow, and encourage, mobile phone users to send low-resolution images and short audio clips with SMS messages or by WAP.

Weighing only 145g, the Nokia 7650 offers a full-graphics colour display, a joystick with five way navigation, GPRS-compatibility for an ‘always on’ connection to WAP and other 2.5G services and a built-in Bluetooth module for wireless communication that doesn’t need direct line of sight. Most interestingly of all, the device has a built-in digital camera that allows the user to point and click, capture images with a standard resolution of 640×480 dpi – to send by WAP or e-mail to friends and colleagues. The phone is controlled by the Symbian mobile operating system and comes with 4Mbyte for storing captured images, phonebook entries and messages. The Nokia 7650 will be available to buy in the first quarter of 2002 and will cost around £400.
