Mobile operators resist EU roaming charge cap

The GSM Association is opposing the planned European Commission cap on mobile phone roaming charges. 

The trade body, which represents mobile phone operators and manufacturers across the world, said that the proposals were “deeply flawed”. 

European Commission officials intend to tackle the high cost of roaming by introducing a cap on the costs mobile operators can charge each other for calls, and limiting the profit margin the firms can charge consumers.

“The Commission is trying to force uniform prices across Europe and dictate what are acceptable returns to business through regulation,” said Rob Conway, chief executive of the GSM Association.

The Commission has created a website offering advice and help to consumers that want to reduce their roaming costs.
