Mobile devices accounting for quarter of online TV viewers

Almost one in four (24%) visits to online TV service, Aertv, have been from a mobile device, with Apple’s iPad accounting almost half (45%) of these. ? ?

These statistics were presented at the Connected TV World Summit in London by Philippe Brodeur, director of Aertv.

“People using Aertv are using Apple iPhones and Android smartphones, but especially the Apple iPad, as a way to resolve screen conflicts when family members do not agree what to watch on the living room TV. Viewing spikes around sporting events, especially. What is happening is that someone is ‘owning’ the main TV and tablets are very much the second television in the house,” he said.?

?Brodeur endorsed research from Forrester Research which has found that for some consumers, the tablet is not just complimenting television but they are the new television. Forrester says that many tablet owners "are using tablets as personal TVs where they had none before: the kitchen, bathroom, and airports."?

?Forrester predicts 112.5 million US consumers will own a tablet by 2016 and tablets are disrupting several multibillion-dollar industries related to TV, including cable, broadcasting, advertising and consumer electronics.?

?Research has also found that in-home viewing accounts for 80% of all the viewing on the mobile devices and that when using an iPad the average viewing times on the service increases to 12.5 minutes from 10.5 on the iPhone and 7.5 minutes for other devices. Live shows held the greatest attraction for users.??

Brodeur was speaking as part of a breakfast briefing panel on day one on the subject of extending the reach of pay-TV using OTT (over-the-top) internet-connected devices looking at content rights considerations, the infrastructure challenge and viable alternatives to ‘classic’ broadcast TV.
