Mighty megapixels in a small package

Kyocera says that its Finecam S5 is the world’s smallest 5-megapixel camera. The Finecam S5’s small, stainless steel case is a fine feature: the camera weighs just 6.9oz and its manufacturer says that it should feel substantial despite its small size. It comes with a black metal curtain protector to protect its lens. This camera captures large files (over 2Mbyte at its best setting), which usually translates into lots of image detail.

The S5 is a snapshot model not meant to compete with enthusiast cameras. It provides few controls beyond a simple white-balance calibrator and settings for sharpness and colour intensity (chroma). More important, it lacks a low-light focusing aid, so indoor photos could come out fuzzy even when the flash is turned on. The Finecam S5 certainly packs in the megapixels, but remember: that’s not the only indicator of a good camera. The Kyocera Finecam S5 retails for EUR699.
