Although Microsoft search engines are still behind both Google and Yahoo! in search engine market shares, it is the only one of the three to have gained in the past four weeks, according to Irish firm StatCounter.
Microsoft’s share includes MSN Search, Live Search, and Bing, and in the two weeks before Bing’s launch on May 28 and the two weeks after, Microsoft’s U.S. shares went up from 7.4% to 9% (up 1.6%). Meanwhile, during the same time period Google dropped from 78.68% to 77.94% (down 0.74%), and likewise for Yahoo!, from 11.46% to 10.76% (down 0.7%).
Internationally, StatCounter discovered similar rise and falls. Google dropped by 0.12%, Yahoo! dropped by 0.24%, and Microsoft jumped from 3.08% to 3.5% (up 0.42%).
In both instances, Microsoft still takes a solid third behind Google and Yahoo!, but considering Bing’s wary initial reception it may bode well for the company.
Bing promises quicker, more accurate results as a result of syntactic search programming, but many question its chance at success given the extremely strong foothold Google already has in not only the Internet market but in society as well.
