Meta to stop political advertising in the EU from October
Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp parent company Meta Platforms has announced that starting from early October 2025, it will no longer allow political or social issue ads on its platforms within the European Union. The decision is a direct response to the upcoming EU regulation on Transparency and Targeted Political Advertising (TTPA).
According to Meta, the TTPA imposes ‘unworkable requirements and legal uncertainties’, making it difficult to continue offering these advertising services.
Outside the EU, Meta will continue to allow political ads. Within the bloc, citizens and politicians will still be able to freely post and discuss political topics, as long as they do not pay to promote these messages.
Meta states that the TTPA imposes far-reaching restrictions, which would make ads less relevant for users. The company also claims that the measures undermine personalised ads, which Meta says are important for both advertisers and users.
What the ultimate impact will be on election campaigns in the EU remains to be seen.
Research by the University of Amsterdam from 2020 showed that personalised messages from political parties can influence voters’ choices.
