Meta to discontinue Like and Comment buttons on websites

Plugins on borrowed time as social network giant pivots to serve more contemporary user behaviours

Meta has announced that two of its best-known social plugins – the Like button and the Comment button for external websites – will no longer be active from 10 February 2026.

The plugins have been popular for years on blogs, news sites, and other websites that used the buttons to encourage engagement via the platform.

From the February, however, the buttons will automatically become invisible – they will technically remain present in the code, but will be rendered as a 0×0-pixel element and will not cause any errors.

For website administrators, no immediate action is required: the integration does not need to be removed straight away.

According to Meta, usage of these external plugins has declined as the digital landscape has changed, and the buttons now belong to an earlier era of Web development. The focus is shifting to more modern tools and APIs that better meet the current needs of developers and businesses.
