Meta plans facial recognition feature for smart glasses
Meta plans to enhance its smart glasses with facial recognition technology in order to maintain its lead in wearable tech. Meta’s gamble on wearables has turned out to be a big success for the company. With this feature, ‘name tag’, users will be able to identify people they encounter and access online information about them via Meta’s AI assistant.
Leaked internal documents and reports from The New York Times show that Meta is exploring various approaches to implementing facial recognition technology. One option is to make use of existing connections between users on platforms such as Facebook or Instagram, while another focuses on using publicly available profiles.
According to insiders, Meta is looking into several ways to roll out facial recognition on a wide scale. For instance, Meta AI could share details between users who are already connected on Facebook or Instagram. Another avenue would be to identify users solely on the basis of their public profiles.
Despite the potential benefits, Meta recognises the controversial nature of this new feature. An internal memo from Reality Labs anticipates strong criticism from privacy advocates and proposes a strategic launch date to minimise the backlash.
Meta initially planned to introduce name tags in 2025 at a conference for blind people. However, the event passed without any announcement, suggesting that the company may have adjusted its plans.
