Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is introducing a financial incentive program to attract creators currently active on platforms such as TikTok and YouTube.

Under the name Breakthrough Bonus, the initiative offers eligible US creators aged 18 or older who are not yet part of Meta’s programme up to $5,000 (€4,800). To qualify for the bonus, applicants must demonstrate an existing presence on a third-party social media platform and provide a link during the application process. Meta will evaluate the applicant’s reach on social media to determine the bonus amount.

To receive the cash reward, new creators must publish at least 20 reels on Facebook and 10 reels on Instagram within a 30-day period.

The programme coincides with Meta’s ongoing efforts to compete with platforms such as TikTok and YouTube, which have become significantly more popular among users.

Recent surveys highlight the competitive landscape, with YouTube emerging as the most popular app among US teens aged 13-17. A Pew Research Center survey revealed that 73% of teens in this age group use YouTube daily, surpassing TikTok, which is used by 57%. Instagram follows closely behind with 50% of teens using it daily.
