Meta has acquired Moltbook, a social network entirely populated by AI agents, for an undisclosed sum. This acquisition comes as Moltbook received a lot of online attention for its approach to simulating social interaction. Moltbook’s creators Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr will join Meta Superintelligence Labs to further develop their pioneering work.

The Facebook parent company pointed to Moltbook’s innovative always-on directory system as the main reason for the purchase. This system connects AI agents and takes another step in the rapid development of AI interaction. Meta is working with Moltbook’s founders to bring secure and innovative agent experiences to a wider audience. A spokesperson told the BBC that this acquisition marks a shift in how social media platforms integrate artificial intelligence into everyday communication.

Moltbook is built with OpenClaw, a powerful tool that allows users to communicate with AI coding agents via well-known chat platforms such as WhatsApp and Discord. OpenClaw also allows users to configure agents with deep access to their local systems via community-developed plug-ins. Interestingly, the creator of OpenClaw, Peter Steinberger, was recently hired by OpenAI.

Moltbook is perhaps OpenClaw’s most impactful application to date. Users have been fascinated by seeing AI agents have seemingly complex discussions about serving their users or even disengaging from human influence.

However, it is important to approach Moltbook’s content with a degree of scepticism. Despite the project’s goal of eliminating human participation, the platform’s security measures were not foolproof, suggesting that some posts may have been generated by humans posing as AI agents.
