Meta announced the acquisition of chip developer Rivos. Financial terms of the detail were no disclosed.

The strategic move is intended to bolster Meta’s internal development of semiconductors for artificial intelligence (AI). Although no financial details have been disclosed, the acquisition once again makes it clear that Meta wants to be less dependent on external chip suppliers such as Nvidia.

Rivos is based in Santa Clara, California, and specialises in designing chips that use the RISC-V architecture. This open-source alternative to the architectures of industry giants like Arm, Intel, and AMD offers flexibility and cost-effectiveness.

Meta said that Rivos’ expertise in building complete AI systems will accelerate its own chip development, particularly for its MTIA family (Meta Training and Inference Accelerator).

Reports suggest that Rivos was valued at around $2 billion ahead of a planned funding round. Meta, already a major customer of Rivos, saw the start-up’s potential in advancing AI hardware solutions. With this acquisition, Meta gains access to advanced chip technology, while being able to tailor it specifically to its AI needs.
