Hacker collective LulzSec has denied reports that it has obtained and planned to distribute data from the 2011 UK Census. A posting on the group’s official Twitter feed distanced itself from a document posted on Pastebin yesterday claiming to be from the group, saying it had obtained the records of every citizen who completed the census.
At 3pm today a tweet appeared on the @LulzSec account saying: Just saw the pastebin of the UK census hack. That wasn’t us – don’t believe fake LulzSec releases unless we put out a tweet first.”
The document, submitted by a user calling themself ‘Cap’n Pierre “Lulz” Dubois’, said stolen census records would be published after reformatting the data, which could result in the release of personal information on file sharing website The Pirate Bay.
LulzSec has also denied that arrested 19-year-old Ryan Cleary is a member of the group. Cleary, from Essex, was a network administrator for the AnonOps group, which claimed responsibility for last year’s Operation: Payback, where financial institutions were targeted for blocking donations to Wikileaks. Sony was targeted in a separate attack over its prosecution of PlayStation 3 hacker George Hotz.
According to a report in TheTechHerald.com, AnonOps disbanded in May after an internal dispute.
A spokesperson for the London Metropolitan Police has not confirmed the identity of the arrested hacker, but described the development as ‘significant.’
