Tube or not to be? There’s no question about it for mobile commuters

Regular Irish visitors to the British capital are all too familiar with the Bermuda triangle of cellphone reception, aka the London Underground.

Today sees the start of Wi-Fi connectivity trials at Charing Cross station, hailed as the first step to get mobile phones working on The Tube.

The six-month tests initially bring Wi-Fi connectivity to the Charing Cross ticket hall and to platforms at the Bakerloo and Northern lines.

The service is free for BT broadband customers and for mobile users with free Wi-Fi minutes.

Several previous efforts to get The Tube connected have come to nought but now London’s Mayor, Boris Johnson, has called for lamp posts and bus stops to be Wi-Fi enabled as part of a scheme to bring blanket mobile coverage to the city by the time the Olympics kick off in 2012.

About 95% of the City of London so far has Wi-Fi coverage, but the dead zones are a cause of constant annoyance.
