LiveLinx, the live outside broadcasting service from AirSpeed Telecom and Digital Space, is to expand its geographical reach across Europe thanks to a new Ka band satellite capability from UK-based Avanti Communications. The move will offer broadcasters across Europe time and cost savings by reducing satellite uplink fees and operational costs.

Livelinx’s expanded offering will provide broadcasters with a vehicle equipped with a bespoke MPEG4 uplink for broadcasting live feeds from across Europe. Livelinx will initially offer a vehicle-based solution for self-operated lease. Connectivity with the broadcaster is achieved via a dedicated IP connection from AirSpeed Telecom’s point of presence.

Liam O’Kelly, MD of AirSpeed Telecom, said: "The availability of Avanti’s Ka band satellite platform for broadcasters heralds a game changer in satellite news gathering. Now, for the first time, we have small terminals capable of delivering excellent broadcast quality signals at a much lower cost than was possible with Ku band."

The IP-based service can also be expanded to include Web, VPN and telephone connectivity.

AirSpeed Telecom together with Digital Space launched Livelinx in 2010 and since then the service has been taken up by RTE and TV3 for news and sports coverage. It also facilitated live reporting on the visits by President Obama and Queen Elizabeth II in 2011.
