Liteon’s LitePanel GC150ATA makes style affordable

Let’s face it: given the choice between a CRT and an LCD monitor, most people would choose the LCD. It takes up far less space and looks more sophisticated and refreshingly different from conventional monitors — something for people to stop at your desk and ‘ooh’ over.

Aimed more at those of us who don’t have deep pockets and bursting wallets, the LitePanel 150 is an analogue TFT LCD monitor with a 15-in screen.

At first glance, it looks fairly simple. No dazzling array of buttons and lights to faze the inexperienced user — a welcome relief from some models currently on the market. Four buttons and a power switch — minimalism at its best!

Trying to find where the cables go took a few minutes, but if all else fails, read the instruction manual.

Step by step instructions show you how to hook up your new monitor, complete with helpful little illustrations. If you’ve followed all the steps and your monitor still doesn’t seem to work properly, the troubleshooting section should sort out the last of your problems.

Visually, this monitor isn’t as flashy as some currently available on the market, but the combination of silver and blue really appealed to me. Like most LCD monitors, the resolution is crisper and it is more compact than the standard CRT alternative. In other words, it’s time to reclaim the desk and stop blaming innocent pieces of hardware for crowding your workspace.

15″ thin & crispy

The 15-in monitor has a display area of 304.1×228.1mm, more than adequate for standard use. The speakers are built into the base of the monitor. Surround sound it ain’t, but who can complain? It does the job, lets you know when your e-mail arrives and gives you decent enough sound on your computer.

The energy saving aspects of the monitor should please those who are conscious of both the environment and their wallet.

If I really had to complain about something, it would be the utility disk that came with the monitor. Unlike with most other monitors, the utility was supplied on a floppy disk rather than a CD. As floppy disk drives are a thing of the past for Mac users, together with the manual being economic with instructions, the relevance of the contained setup utility to Macs remains ambiguous. In the event that the supplied setup utility is superfluous to Mac requirements, the printing of one or two extra words stating the fact would hardly have broken the bank.
