Keyboard passes the Coke test

A rugged keypad, designed with school canteens in mind, enables users to order pre-paid meals using a pin number. This option replaces dinner money, obviates stigma for children getting free meals, and enables each pupil’s diet to be individually monitored.

The SpillSafe100 is supplied by custom-designed IT peripherals vendor Electrone Europe.
Electrone, a supplier of data entry devices to US high schools, is expanding across Europe and plans to expand its network of resellers for this range of new products. The keypad can also include a biometric scanner, contactless payment options, or a barcode reader for two-factor authentication.

The keypad’s rubber cover absorbs impact and protects against liquid spills. To test it, Electrone says its engineers drench the keypad with a litre of coke and then a litre of water. To pass the test, it must be able to restart without user intervention.

The manufacturer says the keypad is fully compliant with RoHS environmental standards and would be suitable in other harsh environments.
