Irish travellers bound for Brittany will soon be able to use their mobile phones to buy French train tickets on their mobile phones. The service will later be extended beyond Brittany. Other European countries offer a variety of mobile phone ticketing services, but few of them allow a user to make the entire purchase, from start to finish, by phone, according to MobileAware said.
Travellers in France select and buy the tickets using an internet-enabled phone and the Tikefone website.
Tikefone is similar to a trial that will begin in October in seven German cities including Dusseldorf, Hamburg and Dresden, where selected customers can buy and download tickets on their phones, though they must first download a Java-based application to their phones in order to use the Siemens-designed service.
Other rail networks, including the Swiss train system, allow customers to buy tickets from their computers and receive ticket details via SMS to their mobile phones.
