The Institute of Technology Blanchardstown (ITB) is currently hosting a mathematics workshop titled ‘Maths and Sport: Countdown to the Games’ for Maths Week which takes place from 15-19 of October. The project targets the first year students from local secondary Schools, showing how maths could be applied to the understanding of sports at this year’s Olympic Games, held in London.
This is the sixth project of its kind at ITB, with over 280 students attending from Blakestown Community School; Luttrellstown Community College; Hartstown Community School; Setanta Community College; Riversdale Community College; Mount Sackville Secondary School; Rathoath College; and Coolmine Community School.
Each student will take part in a collection of hands-on mathematical puzzles, games and activities designed to promote creative approaches to maths and strategic thinking.
Sue Hickman from the University of Cambridge will be giving the workshop said: "The Maths of Sport Roadshow explores some of the underlying mathematics of Olympic and Paralympic Games through a ‘maths pentathlon’ where students compete in teams on five hands-on mathematical activities, focused on sport and the infrastructure of planning and designing large sports events. Maths of Sport is one of the workshops presented by the Millennium Mathematics project, based in the University of Cambridge.
"We aim to support maths education and promote the development of mathematical skills and understanding, particularly through enrichment activities. More broadly, we want to help everyone share in the excitement and understand the importance of mathematics, she continued.
Mairead Murphy, marketing and development manager, ITB said: "This event is financed from our Access Office which has enabled us to run a number of hands-on mathematics workshops for local schools. The workshops give students an insight into how they can use mathematics on a day to day basis. The workshops take place on the ITB campus which also allows students to experience a day in the life of a third level student."
