A new nationwide information and awareness campaign about IT security issues took place on November 17th 2004. The ‘make IT secure’ initiative, which was recently announced by the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Noel Dempsey, T.D. aims to inform all PC users how they can take the necessary steps to make their computer systems secure.
The campaign, which is backed by a number of high profile companies including Microsoft, Eircom, HP, Dell, Symantec and EsatBT, will be communicated through extensive advertising, marketing, direct mail and PR campaigns. A comprehensive booklet with straightforward and simple information will also be distributed to over 800,000 PC users in Ireland. Speaking at the launch of the
initiative, Minister Dempsey said: ‘Our aim is to help educate Irish consumers and businesses about the simple steps they can take to protect their PCs. We are calling on all PC users to use an Internet firewall, ensure that their operating system is kept up-to-date and to use anti-virus software.’
He continued: ‘The issue of IT security is becoming increasingly more relevant as Internet and IT usage in Ireland continues to increase. Through this campaign we will provide all PC users with the information they need to inform them of risks and to ensure that their online experience is as enjoyable and productive as possible.’
