IRMA Digital File Check Software

Life

2 November 2005

IRMA has a launched a special file check application which is free to download from its website. The Digital File Check designed by DtecNet is designed to allow parents to monitor the music, video and picture files that their children download to the family PC so that the parent can be proactive in protecting the family from copyright infringements and possible legal prosecution for illegal file sharing.

The software itself is easy to install and includes a flash demo which takes the uninitiated and nervous through the steps of identifying and removing P2P file sharing applications and illegal files that may have downloaded from other users on these networks.

We ran a test on the software and it picked up the P2P application Limewire, which we had installed on the test PC, in its scan. It then offered us the option of deleting or disabling this application.

In the second step, it scanned for all files in shared folders and listed all of the music that we had ripped from personal music collections so we could transfer them to a portable music player.

Thirdly, it displayed all other multimedia – video, music and photos – in folders on the test PC’s hard disk that were not shared folder used by P2P programs.

Verdict 8/10

The application does what say it will do and in a very straightforward manner. It will give concerned parents peace of mind that their children will be prevented from sharing copyright music without permission.

It is also extremely easy to use, so even technophobes should be able to master its features and use it effectively
