Irish iPhone users fully connected

8 December 2008

The results from the first survey of Irish iPhone users has shown that iPhone users are “always-on” consumers that use their phone to call, text, surf and buy and who remain very loyal to their iPhone.

Over the past few weeks 115 iPhone users were surveyed where the iPhone is relatively new to the market with the current 3G version only on the market for 6 months and the older ‘Gen 1’ iPhone only available since March. Worldwide, Apple has sold over 10 million units to date and the 3G iPhone was the best-selling handset in the U.S. during the third quarter of 2008,

Damien Mulley from Mulley Communications, who carried out the survey, said: “The loyalty and spending power of Irish iPhone users is staggering. 72% would recommend the phone to their friends despite outcry in Ireland at the high purchase price and monthly tariffs and despite 56% of those surveyed saying battery life is an issue for them. It seems Irish iPhone users can see no wrong with it. In terms of spending power, a third of iPhone users have used their device to purchase music while they have spent on average of €17 to buy and install applications too which is impressive since the application feature is only available the past 6 months. More than 50% too spend more than their monthly contract price. The iPhone is certainly a good earner for o2.”

Despite Irish iPhone consumers spending so much on the phone, they appear to be clever when it comes to saving money for some things as one of the most popular applications that Irish owners have downloaded is the Eirtext application. Eirtext allows Irish iPhone users to access their free webtext messages from o2, Vodafone or Meteor.

Mulley added “While Irish people pay the highest mobile bills in Europe, it appears that phones like the iPhone can get even more revenue from users if the phone is well-designed and allows them easy access to content and applications. There is an opportunity then for content creators and developers to access this new and growing market and use Ireland as a testbed for the rest of the world.”
